BOTTOM OF NATIONAL ART LIBRARY STAIRS ROOM 25

Ark, Rintala Eggertsson Architects
Nestled against a staircase that leads up to the V&A's National Art Library - itself a site of refuge and retreat - this free-standing wooden tower re-evaluates the concept of the 'archive'. The façades of the tower consist of hundreds of shelves, holding thousands of books. Oriented to face inwards, the book spines gather together to form a rich collage of colours and typographic textures. In contrast, the exterior façade of the structure is dominated by the minimalist white of exposed page edges.

The project investigates how small spaces can focus our energies and thoughts in moments of study, meditation and self-reflection. Accessed via a spiral staircase, the tower invites visitors to explore the structure, have a leisurely browse through the books, and select a private reading chamber in which to enjoy their selection.
Architects Build Small Places -exhibition at Victoria and Albert Museum

Architecture is intrinsically part of our everyday experience. Yet architecture exhibitions, with their emphasis on drawings, models and photographs, sometimes deny their audience an engagement with actual buildings.

Using the landscape of the Museum as a test site, the V&A invited nineteen architects to submit proposals for structures that examine notions of refuge and retreat. From these nineteen concept submissions, seven were selected for construction at full-scale.

Small spaces such as these can push the boundaries and possibilities of creative practice. A shift in scale towards smaller, bespoke structures encourages a heightened sensitivity to materials, texture and proportion. A renewed clarity emerges, allowing architects a freedom of expression that often struggles to survive in larger building projects.

PROM 46; Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra

The Philharmonia and its Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen are joined by one of today's leading French pianists in Ravel's fiendish test of the left hand, stretching ears as much as fingers in a racy, sometimes macabre mix of styles from Romantic to jazz.

In the climax to our 75th-birthday celebrations for Estonian Arvo Pärt, Salonen conducts the composer's first symphony for over 35 years, having given the world premiere last year with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mosolov's clangorous outburst of 1920s industrial optimism, unheard at the Proms for 70 years, is complemented by Scriabin's breathtakingly prolonged crescendo of mystical sensuality.

PROM 56; Osmo Vänskä conducts the Minnesota Orchestra

Osmo Vänskä, whose enthusiastic following in the UK dates from his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1996–2002), returns for two Proms with the Minnesota Orchestra, which has seen a revival under his music directorship since 2003.

Tonight the cinematic incidental music imagined by anniversary composer Samuel Barber for a scene from Shelley's Prometheus Unbound contrasts with the expansive splendour of Bruckner's 'Romantic' Symphony. Young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein makes her Proms debut in the first of Shostakovich's two concertos honed around the skill and and stamina of the great Mstislav Rostropovich.

This year's performance of Beethoven's Ninth, a sought-after fixture of every Proms season, concludes the visit by Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, who together have recorded one of the most widely acclaimed Beethoven cycles of recent years.

In the mystical heights and ecstatic momentum of the Ninth's final hymn to universal brotherhood they are joined by the BBC Symphony Chorus and an quartet of international soloists.

Former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Lisa Batiashvili returns to the Proms to play the tragic and consoling violin concerto by one of the last century's most eloquent composers.

PROM 66; Soprano Karita Mattila with Berliner Philharmoniker

In the first half of their second Prom, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic pair late works by two of Germany's greatest late-Romantics – 'Richard the First' and 'Richard the Third', as the conductor Hans von Bülow rather wickedly called them (quipping that, after Wagner, there could be no 'Richard the Second').

After the interval come the sensational sonic adventures by the three great musical pioneers of early-20th-century Vienna. Celebrated Finnish soprano Karita Mattila returns to the Proms as soloist in Strauss's opulently nostalgic reflections on life's last days.

About this concert
To open Wigmore Hall’s 110th anniversary season we have a very special event. Hailed by Musical America in 2005 as ‘the most electrifying singing actress of our day’, Finnish soprano Karita Mattila traces almost a century of Austro-German song, and includes selections by Sibelius and by Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), the composer she regards as ‘Finland’s hidden jewel’.

Kimmo Pohjonen and Pekka Kuusisto

Finnish accordion adventurer Kimmo Pohjonen, has revolutionised accordion music and performance with his unique blend of acoustic and electronic. He expands the capabilities and experience of the accordion to levels never before seen or heard, utilizing live loops, effects, surround sound and lights. Here he collaborates for the first time with violinist Pekka Kuusisto, a player set apart by his desire and ability to improvise; and his love of playing many different styles of music, channelling the same intensity into each genre.

‘In the hands of Finland's Kimmo Pohjonen, the accordion abandons its folk roots to become a gutbusting furnace of shamanic sound, animated by primal energies and orchestral dynamics ... a performer whose blend of virtuosity and resolute experimentation is routinely likened to that of Jimi Hendrix and Laurie Anderson.’ (The Wire)

In one of the most passionate love stories ever told, Tristan and Isolde's lives are set on a path to tragedy by the swapping of a bottle of poison for a love potion. Yet this tragedy also results in their all-encompassing love for each other, and the intensity of their passion is expressed through Wagner's sumptuous chromaticism and lush orchestral colours. The opera is one of the peaks of the operatic repertory, and the climax of Isolde's 'Liebestod' is one of the most moving and all-encompassing musical moments ever written. This concert performance, directed by Peter Sellars, will be set against the stunning backdrop of Bill Viola's film projections, further exploring the emotional subtexts of the work.

The performance will run for five hours and include two intervals.

Jean Sibelius: Finlandia
Johannes Brahms: Piano Concerto No.1
Interval
Jean Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Suite, Op.22

Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor
Hélène Grimaud piano

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the music of his compatriot Jean Sibelius in this concert. Sibelius's tone poem Finlandia sets the soundworld with its nationalistic evocations of scenes from Finnish history; followed by Lemminkäinen, an orchestral suite based on the Finnish national epic poem, the 'Kalevala'. The most famous movement describes 'The Swan of Tuonela' with a cor anglais' melody gliding over the musical water of the strings and woodwind. The other movements are equally evocative and atmospheric, moving from the 'Land of the Dead' to the hero's exploits in battle. Between these, Brahms' First Piano Concerto provides a flamboyant display of pianistic virtuosity

KIUAS and CELESTY on UK tour

For the first time in the label’s history, three acts signed to the Spinefarm label will embark on a series of UK shows in tandem, flying the flag for epic heavy metal (Finnish five-piece KIUAS), authentic folk metal ( Estonian quartet Metsatöll) & dramatic power metal (Finnish sextet CELESTY).

KIUAS, who have played in the UK on a number of occasions, including an appearance at the Bloodstock Open Air Festival plus a full run of dates with Firewind, will headline all of the shows, with Metsatöll providing the meat in the middle, and Celesty (who have also featured on the Bloodstock bill) opening the bill.
KIUAS recently released their latest album, ‘Lustdriven’, supported by the single/video ‘Of Love, Lust & Human Nature’, following hard on the heels of ‘Aio’ – Metsatöll‘s first release for the Spinefarm label.

CELESTY’s latest offering, ‘Vendetta’, came out in 2009, and saw the six heading deep into symphonic / progressive rock territory, with tracks such as ‘Lord (Of This Kingdom)’, ‘Like Warriors’ and first video ‘Fading Away’ showing that musical ambition doesn’t have to lead to any loss of power. Latest news from the camp is that the band now have a new frontman, with previous singer Antti Railio having recently been replaced by Tony Turunen – brother of former Nightwish frontwoman, Tarja.

October tour dates:
20th – Wrexham, Central Station
22nd – Sheffield, Corporation
23rd – Glasgow, Ivory Blacks
24th – Nottingham, Basement
26th – London, Underworld

Wrexham, Sheffield, Glasgow, Nottingham and London
